Heat Exhaustion and exercise When the heat index is high, it's best to exercise in an air-conditioned environment. But if your one of those people who must go outside, use some common sense. You can prevent heat exhaustion by taking these steps. General recommendations - Before = drink24ounces2 hours before, consider adding 8 ounces of water or sports drink before exercise.
- During = consume another 8 ounces every 20 minutes, even if you don't feel thirsty.
